It's so funny cuz I'm such a Madonna fag, but this album isn't easy to love for me. I'm liking it more and more with each listen, but I have a hard time not feeling like she's venturing into Kylie territory.

somebody recently said to me that "kylie territory" is nothing but a gerrymandering of "madonna territory" and now madonna is just redistricting again. it was pretty funny at the moment but now that i think about it, its pretty accurate. shrug

Kylie started out as a Madonnette, but she veered off on her own tangent a long time ago and hasn't been in sync with Madonna for awhile, I think. Madonna doesn't have anything like "Light Years", "Fever" or "Body Language" (although some of the ballads there are a bit Bedtime Stories-ish).

no she doesn't have entire albums like Light Years or Fever and thankfully not like Body Language. There are many singles from Madonna that she has done that are better than any of those albums. COADF is a much darker souding Fever. I don't think they are really in competition anymore. they have staked otu their places in history, but i think Madonna is able to the pull that package together better than Kylie.

well, right, but i'm assuming if madonna's wearing red plaid bondage pants with a union jack tank top, she's going more for a malcolm maclaren thing than a BSDM thing.

very true... but it was also going back to her forgotten roots. most people don't that she spent time in the punk scene before she found her calling as a Pop Icon.

warhol as well. regardless, that look is apart of her past as well. punk rock is more like a state of mind as i was told last night at a meeting for SPI. it's a state mind she lives in most of the time as well.

1983: Way we were ... Paula, left and Donna ready for Madge gig

PAULA DAVIDS and Donna Treanor saw Madonna’s first ever gig on British soil in 1983.

The ageless superstar was back at the same venue in North London on Tuesday night.

Here Paula, 39, and Donna, 42, both of Croydon, South London, relive that night of 22 years ago.

Paula said: “It was a week night and I shouldn’t have been there – but I’m glad I went.

“I remember her singing Holiday and everyone clapping. She had attitude even then.”

Donna added: “She was really focused and, like me, she hasn’t really aged much since then.

I love Neon Nights too, but I think Body Language is significantly better. You wouldn't find "It Won't Work Out" on Body Language...

In any case, I don't want to turn this into yet another Madonna vs. Kylie thread. lol

I'm loving the new album more with each play. The songs have sunk into my core already.

i think bedtime stories has a bunch of ok songs and a few classics. bedtime story, secret, and take a bow are faves but the rest is only ok for me. sometimes i'm really feeling sanctuary but that's the most of it.

"Sanctuary" is the best! I adore "Survival", "Inside of Me" and "Forbidden Love" too. The extra stuff from that period is perfection.

Her '94/'95 era is one of her most overlooked and most consistent I'd say.

I agree. I've been thinking about it and I think Madonna's height as a writer/producer/singer/artist is the early ninties (including '94 with "Bedtime Stories", it's outakes/remixes, and "I'll Remember"). The eighties were great and "Like A Prayer" was special but after "I'm Breathless", Madonna did no wrong musically (or very little) until the ballad era of 95-96 (with "Evita") and things got a bit stale. I never loved "I Want You" although I know people do.

so, I'm not sure of the Madonna-Thread-Norms right now. This may be deserving of a different thread, but I didn't know.

And, after skimming this thread there seems to be a lot of reflection on her past work. So, I present to you Entertainment Weekly's list of the 10 most unjustly ignored Madonna tunes. Discuss smile

''Think of Me'' (Madonna, 1983)
You probably composed more complicated synth lines on your Casio back in 10th grade, but darned if that monotonous bleep-bleep-bleep doesn't provide a rock-solid foundation for young Miss Ciccone's game warble. The song's message of demanding respect in a relationship is just as simple, and equally timeless. But if there's any doubt about the decade Madonna produced this confection, the righteous sax solo near the end is as effective as carbon dating.

''Over and Over'' (Like a Virgin, 1984)
Admittedly, there are as many clichés as there are beats per minute on this unrepentantly sunny number. But, singing with an enthusiasm that borders on scary, Madonna sells the message — ''I get up again, over and over'' — completely. Spin it liberally...for inspiration.

''More'' (I'm Breathless: Songs From and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy, 1990)
''Nothing's better than more,'' Madonna sings, channeling her Breathless Mahoney character from Dick Tracy. And indeed, when it comes to the movie's soundtrack, nothing really is better than ''More.'' Just when you think Stephen Sondheim's rapid-fire wordplay is about to get away from her, Madonna pushes through, proving she's got a stronger instrument than a lot of critics would like to admit.

''Waiting'' (Erotica, 1992)
Who knew Hip-Hop Madonna was such a complicated gal? Sing-speaking over a spare beat, jingly piano, and sinister bass line, Madonna at first conveys a desperate, aching longing for her no-good lover, but gradually shifts to a mood of icy disdain, culminating in a scathing closing line that's not fit for print on a family website. Wicked, and wickedly good.

''Bedtime Story'' (Bedtime Stories, 1995)
It may be one of Madonna's few singles from the '90s that didn't crack the Top 40 (it peaked at No. 42 on the Billboard charts), but you've got to admire her for foisting a zesty, Björk-penned electronica track onto the airwaves. Coupled with an eye-popping video that had Madge free-falling through the galaxy and popping doves out of her stomach, ''Bedtime Story'' will always be a smash hit, at least in the minds of her loyal fans.

''Buenos Aires'' (Evita, 1996)
Ambitious girl arrives in the big city with even bigger dreams. It's a story Madonna knows all too well, and, not surprisingly, she infuses Andrew Lloyd Webber's frantic show-stopper with a palpable hunger. ''Give me credit, I'll find ways of paying,'' Madonna demands. Far be it from us to make the lady ask twice.

''Drowned World/Substitute for Love'' (Ray of Light, 1998)
Listening to superstars ruminate on the trappings of fame and fortune is usually a pretty tedious exercise, but here, Madonna breathes new life into the idea that ''some things cannot be bought'' by giving one of the most nuanced vocal performances of her career. The submerged soundscape gives the impression she's singing from the bottom of the ocean, but as she crescendos to the climactic mmm-mmm, it's clear Madonna's also singing from the bottom of her heart. ''Drowned World'' may not have been released as a single in the States, but the fact that Madonna chose it as the name of her 2001 tour tells you it's one of her favorites too.

''Shanti/Ashtangi'' (Ray of Light, 1998)
What is Madonna singing about on this hypnotizing little ditty? Beats the heck out of me, but the whirling percussion, layered vocals, and flourishes of flute take me somewhere distant and sublime — the Ajanta Caves, perhaps, or maybe the Kabbalah Centre?

''I Deserve It'' (Music, 2000)
Forget about co-producer Mirwais' whirs and whistles: At its heart, ''I Deserve It'' is a soulful acoustic track that, lyrically and melodically, ranks as one of Madonna's loveliest compositions.

''Nobody Knows Me'' (American Life, 2003)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, American Life was too preachy for its own good, and this song was among the primary offenders. (Sample lyric: ''I don't watch TV. I don't waste my time, reading magazines.'' Gah!) Still, if you treat Madgebot's vocoder-enhanced instrument as just another space-age effect, the message dissipates into the larger surround-sound spectacle, and you're left with a track that'll give you a workout on the dance floor or the treadmill.

I'll give them "Over And Over", one of my favorites, but that's about it.

"Drowned World/Substitute for Love" is a great song, was a hit in the UK and in most people's minds, one of the most memorable ROL tracks. Not overlooked!

"Buenos Aires"? "Shanti/Ashtangi"?....Get fucked, EW!

I still don't think they're THAT dissimilar. It's like saying Prince and MJ have nothing in common. Madonna and Kylie are both blonde sex symbol, fashion icons who make dance pop and put on ellaborate, theatrical shows. Kylie dumbs it down and discos it up. Madonna's the meat and potatoes and Kylie's the appetizer and desert. They've both been making their own versions of a Daft Punk album this decade. That said, I was content to have Kylie in her corner doing her Eurotrash disco glitz as a 2nd rate Madonna. Now that Madonna's returning the favor, I can't help but cringe a bit.

Madonna as you've never seen her before. the singing sensation gets personal when she agrees to videotape her everyday life for ABC News - starting with good morning kisses from her kids and her first cup of coffee and breakfast to private workout sessions and getting ready for a night on the town to promote her new album.
Madonna also talks candidly to Cynthia McFadden about her recent fall off of a horse and her road to recovery; recent headline making comments in her documentary, her religion and her new dance album.
The report airs on 'PRIMETIME' on THURSDAY 17 NOVEMBER (9:00-11:00pm E.T.) on the ABC Television Network.

Visit abcnews.go.com/Primetime/ to watch a small preview from the show.

Madge sees ray of light in Bush's woes
Posted: 17 November 2005 - From New York Daily News/Rush and Molloy

Even today, Madonna feels the pain. No, we're not talking about her horseback-riding accident, but rather the reelection of President Bush.
'I was just frigging devastated,' she recalls. 'It was a real sad day. I don't get how people can have all these facts and still turn away from them.' But FEMA's failure in New Orleans gives her hope that voters now see him as nakedly as, say, she was in her 1992 book, 'Sex.' She tells Rolling Stone: '9/11 was too ambiguous. You couldn't prove how the government was somehow in on the deal....You could say, 'Oh, that's just Michael Moore'....New Orleans was undeniable irresponsibility.'
She's more charitable toward Tom Cruise. '(Tom and I are) both in the take-a-lot-of-sh*t club together,' says Her Madgesty, who feels they're both persecuted for their fringe faiths.
'I don't really know what Scientology is,' says the dedicated kabbalist. 'But I don't think anybody else knows, either. They need to shut the (bleep) up.'
She also forgives husband Guy Ritchie for the behavior he displays in her documentary 'I'm Going to Tell You a Secret,' in which we see him slapping her behind, missing her concerts and boring her with his pub songs.
'I feel like we are sort of the Honeymooners, only I'm the Jackie Gleason character,' she tells interviewer Neil Strauss. 'Obviously, he irritates me on a significant basis, as everyone's significant other does.'
Meanwhile, remember last month when Jon Bon Jovi scolded Madonna for exposing her kids to the prying media at movie openings? Madonna's rep Liz Rosenberg told us at the time, 'Madonna has never brought her children to a film premiere.'
So what were Madge and daughter Lourdes doing at the recent London premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'? Rosenberg argues that it was Lourdes' first premiere, 'as far as I know,' and that she's 'a huge Harry Potter fan.'
She adds that Madonna even got a letter from pediatric legend Dr. Benjamin Spock's widow, Mary, 'applauding (her) for the wonderful way she raises her children. So there, Mr. Bon Jovi.'
